Montreal Travel Guide
The city is Canada’s unofficial capital for French language television productions, radio, theatre, film, multimedia and print publishing. The local English-speaking artistic community nevertheless contributes dynamically to the culture of Montréal, and intense collaborations exist between all Montréal communities. The result is a dynamic musical scene, ignited by the presence of numerous musical festivals. The Place des Arts, a complex of different concert and theatre halls surrounding a large open-spaced square in the downtown, is headquarters of the world-renowned Montréal International Jazz Festival which happens every July. Each district in Montréal is unique in its architecture. Perhaps the most obvious contrast of districts is that seen between the modern façade of downtown Montréal and the cobbled streets and stone buildings of Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal in French), which dates back to colonial times. The Boulevard Saint-Laurent, known locally as “The Main,” is one of the best places to find nightlife, with many trendy bars and nightclubs as well as a wide range of restaurants. Montréal boasts some of the finest cuisine in the world, mainly due to the sheer mass of restaurants of which to choose from. There truly is a smorgasbord of options, from Basque to Portuguese. Jewish communities have contributed to the making up of Montréal’s delicatessens, including world-renowned smoked meat sandwiches and of course Montréal -style bagels, rumored to be the best in world! With access to six universities and twelve junior colleges in an 8 km radius, Montréal has the highest concentration of post-secondary students of all major cities in North America. McGill University is the most famous. As for sports, the most popular is undoubtedly hockey. The Montreal Canadiens are one the Original Six NHL teams and hold the greatest number of Stanley Cup Championships. |
